140 hp Mariner shaft fretting

I just pulled the bottom end of my 1979 140 Hp Mariner off to replace the water pump impeller and seal. When I pulled the shaft down out of the motor end I noticed there is some wear/fretting approx. 1 inch down from the splines. Is there a roller bearing up there that could be allowing the shaft to turn in the inner race of that bearing and causing this. If so how do you replace and also how would you get the shaft up thru the bearing race if it was in good shape? It would have to be a very snug fit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
