Re: sandblasting an aluminum boat[Aluminum Boat and Repair Board ] [F A Q ] Posted byWaltuh (209.240.222.32) on April 07, 2002 at 07:46:17:
Hi, I too have a Starcraft, a 1995 18 1/2' center console which had been used in salt water and has an old coat of blue anti-fouling paint on the bottom which I want to remove for fresh water use and while this sand blasting has not yet been done here is what I have learned about sandblasting aluminum boats. "The less pressure that you can use the better as it is possible to blast a hole through aluminum. A good material to use is Bartolite Blasting Abrasive which is a glass media and NOT a glass bead. The glass bead is much too harsh for aluminum. The key to this product is that it works with much lower pressure than the next best thing which is a product called Black Beauty. Black Beauty will work well except you need more pressure and the texture it will leave on the boat is a bit rougher." He goes on to say: "I was really impressed. The boat came back without even a spec of paint on it and the hull was much smoother than I expected.
