I'd use either a marine grade polyurethane or the best outdoor poly you can find. I slopped it on plywood and applied two coats. I'd say it took almost a quart for a 10x10' area (as all sides were coated). Stuff is like a thick plastic coat when dry. I paid about $7 for a quart.
