Prop play ??? need help

I just bought a 1980 35hp Evinrude. Some time ago I read (I think here) about haveing play in the prop when it is in gear is bad......dont know what exactly it was it meant?
When it is in gear (not running) I can turn the prop backwards about 1/2 to 3/4 revolution before it stops. What does this mean?
