the effects are not really that bad but it cause corrosion where the wood contacts the metaland can eat it up over a long time some of the things you can do to help this is to wash the wood down good with water and a scrub brush then stand it up to dry for a few days before you seal it then you can use a sanding sealer to seal the wood from the fiberglass i use treated lumber for transom repairs and i soke it and seal it the same way and never had a problem yet knock on wood good luck
