Hi Mark. I'm having a similar problem tonight. If you take the cover off of the water intake (should be four screws) you will see a likkage on the shaft. You have to hold the shaft with a pair of pliers of somekind and unscrew the linkage, most likely with a hal-inch wrench. My engine is a 35, so they are likely to be similar. My problem is, which way do I turn the linkage. I've tried counter and clockwise and can't get it to come apart. If you figure it out please drop me a line. Thanks, Mike.
