Turning the lean / rich knob too the left will richen the mixture up.

You may just need to turn up the idle a bit.

Its kind of a touchy thing. Leaning the motor will idle it up, but may not let it open up to wide open throttle.

Start by turning the air screw all the way in and backing it out about a turn and 1/4. Throw it in gear and see what happens then. If it works dont mess with it. If not turn the air screw in a little to the right 1/8 of a turn or so, the idle should pick up after a few moments.
Then put it in gear again and see what happens.

Normally if the carb is clean and set correctly, and it still dies when thrown into gear, you have a scored cylinder, which would also make it hard starting. All else fails take a compression check. 95 - 115 depending on the gauge should be sufficient and no noticeable difference in psi per cylinders.
