Yes, you do have to pull the powerhead - no shortcuts. However, it's not as big a job as it may appear. It'll probably chew up the better part of a day, but it's not difficult work. Just mark any wires, cables, etc. with tape if you're concerned with making sure everything gets plugged back in correctly. Be prepared to replace the powerhead to adaptor gasket and the adapter to lower unit gasket. Might be a good idea to pull the lower unit off and replace the waterpump impeller while you're at it. You should be able to find a service manual through iboats, Amazon.com, etc. - a highly recommended investment...
