BTW, it's a 1997 model, the thermostat assy is on or part of the exhaust plate on the side of the engine, and looks like the shift rod disconnects inside the powerhead?

Check out the parts breakdown diagrams, they may be of help to you when working on it. You can build your own list of parts too, which is a very handy feature.

You might try Amazon or eBay for a Yamaha manual. Seloc makes good marine manuals amongst others.
