Rick,

I just purchased an aluminum boat & trailer for fishing and it came with a 5hp (Sears) Ted Williams. It was represented to me that the motor ran but before I attempt to run it, I wanted to service it. I've been researching the motor which has been rather challenging but various websites, including this one, have published a lot of good information.

Here's a quote from one post, "In the Very early 60's, sears motors began being made by McCulloch and had a very different low profile round look. Late in the 60's and early 70's Sears motors began being made by Eska. The Eska's were generally air cooled Clinton and Techumseh powered units. I think only the late McCullochs and Eska's were ever branded Ted Williams"

On my motor I found a chassis no. that began with "154" - according to another site that detailed Sears' ID system, 154 is the code for Eska.

Another good piece of information is that there is a good service manual that is commonly available, at libraries or for purchase, that one can use. It's called the "Old Outboard Motor Service Manual" - there are 2 volumes, vo1. 1 is for up to 30 hp motors, vol.2 is for over 30 hp. I haven't picked it up yet but I have a copy on hold at the library - from everything I've read, it should be a comprehensive reference tool.
